Diet Low Carbohydrate

As technology is getting better each day, we are moving far from how our ancestors used to live. From hunting for food to processed food being available at our doorsteps it has been a long journey and it sure has made life much more comfortable. Now with comfort also comes it’s drawback, now unlike our ancestors, people have weaker bones, less muscle mass, more fat and are comparatively less healthier if we keep apart the medical advancements and facilities.

Carbohydrate has been a very essential part of our diet from ages, which is used to fuel our body. But what if we all ready have enough fuel?? In that case, the extra or surplus fuel will be stored as fat. Over the years there have been many researches over carbohydrates, it’s usage, it’s merits and demerits and also on it’s requirement in the modern human body. After ample of research some experts came out with diets which involved very low to no carbohydrate , high protein and moderate fat. Such diets worked wonders for many but were always under the dark clouds of various controversies. Many experts believed that completely removing Carbs from our diets may lead to what is called as Ketosis which has many negative effects such as increased acidity of the blood, cravings, loss of muscle mass, use of protein as primary source of fuel.

Now let me throw some light over Types of Carbs. Namely there are two main types of carbs:-

Simple Carbohydrates: Simple Carbohydrates or Simple Carbs are the Carbs which cause a sudden insulin spike in our bodies. Now simple carbs are considered to be evil by many health experts, reason being that when there is a large amount of insulin secreted in our body, it tries to utilize all the sugar that is present in the blood stream and if the body does not require all the energy that it would get with all the sugar, body stores it as Fat. Apart from that, if the consumption of simple carbs is kept very frequent and the amount of simple carbs is very high in a person’s diet then that person also posses the risk of developing what is called as Type 2 Diabetes or Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDM). In NIDM the insulin receptors of the cells become insensitive to the insulin molecules which inhibits them from absorbing the sugar available in the blood stream, resulting in a high blood sugar level. However, if used properly, simple carbohydrates can also be helpful at some times, for instance, having simple carbs right after a strenous workout has proven to replenish the Glycogen Reserves of the body and also to increase the number of those reserves. Some example of simple carbs are sugar, white bread, corn, soft drinks, chocolates and sweets and the list goes on.

Complex Carbohydrates: The second type of carbohydrate is Complex Carbs. As the word Complex suggests, the molecules of complex carbs are complex and are broken down by the body slowly which does not result in an insulin spike, hence, all the de-merits of the insulin spike are cancelled out.SomeĀ example of complex carbs are Spinach, brown bread, whole grains, brown rice, oatmeal etc.

Losing Weight With a Low Carbohydrate Diet

By checking the amount of Carbohydrate we consume combined with a good exercise programme it is very much possible to lose weight. Completely stopping or greatly reducing the consumption of Simple Carbs and including complex carbs but in low quantity along with moderate to high amount of protein and moderate amount of fat (EFA) may work like magic for many of you. Now why I chose to say ‘many of you’ was because we are talking here on a general aspect, you should analyze your caloric requirements as well before following a diet or making changes to your diet.

So eat healthy, exercise, sleep well and Stay Healthy.
